Traditional Medicare vs. Medicare Advantage: What It Means for Your Wound Care

If your patient has a chronic wound and Medicare coverage, the type of Medicare they carry matters more than most providers realize — and it directly affects which wound care services they can access, how quickly they can be seen, and what treatments will be covered.

Traditional Medicare (Parts A & B)

Traditional Medicare — also called Original Medicare — is the federal program administered directly by CMS. For wound care, it provides access to the full spectrum of advanced treatments with relatively straightforward reimbursement and minimal prior authorization burden.

Under Traditional Medicare, patients can access bioengineered skin substitutes, amniotic membrane allografts, negative pressure wound therapy, complex debridement, and multilayer compression therapy — all with coverage determined by Medicare LCD and NCD guidelines rather than individual plan policies.

Medicare Advantage Plans

Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurers and must cover at minimum what Traditional Medicare covers — but they can and do impose additional requirements. For wound care patients, this often means prior authorization for advanced dressings and skin substitutes, network restrictions that limit which wound care specialists they can see, and plan-specific coverage policies that vary significantly from carrier to carrier.

Discharge planners and care coordinators frequently encounter situations where a patient with a complex wound is on a Medicare Advantage plan that creates barriers to timely specialist access — delays that can meaningfully impact wound outcomes.
